Overview and programme context
CILPA’s inaugural symposium and conference in Freetown examined the legal legacy of the Special Court for Sierra Leone and introduced CILPA to the local legal community.
CILPA’s inaugural event, “The Legal Legacy of the Special Court for Sierra Leone,” was a well-attended symposium and conference held in Freetown, Sierra Leone on 17 December 2020. The event brought together leading academics, lawyers and judges to examine the legal legacy of the Special Court for Sierra Leone and its continuing relevance to international criminal justice. The theme was deliberately selected because of its direct importance to Sierra Leoneans, while also carrying wider significance for other African post-conflict situations, including countries such as the Central African Republic, The Gambia and South Sudan. The event also served as an opportunity to introduce CILPA to the local legal community. It included two panels with high-profile speakers and a book launch by the keynote speaker and founding president, Professor Charles C. Jalloh, whose on the symposium topic had been published in July 2020.
